THE SPANISH CONQUEST
April 21st, 1519 was a beautiful, hot day and the coast of Veracruz. The sun was shining and the Indian children were running on the beach and playing in the ocean. The men were fishing and the women were preparing the evening meal. Suddenly, a little boy started to shout, “Look, look , a monstrous fish is coming.
Everyone turned and looked out to sea at an incredible sight. Then galleons were slowly sailing towards them.
When the ships finally anchored off the coast, an enormous crowd of curious Indians was watching on the beach.
Hernan Cortes, his 555 men and 16 horses came ashore in small boats. When the Indians saw the blond Spanish leather Cortes and his strange animals, they believed he was a god sent by Quetzalcoatl.
